bullet  General Notes:

April 4, 2006 - Excerpt from Before the King's Daughters: The Files a Marier, 1634 - 1662 by Peter J. Gagne.

In reference to Claire Morin (files a Mariner) married to Jamin or James Bougruignon dit Le Provencal. "Jamin and Claire seem to have had problems with some of their fellow settlers. One night on October 1641 when Jamin and Claire were fishing, they saw Robert Drouin approach with their servant, whom he then beat with the staff of a harpoon. When Jamin attempted to intervene, he was also threatened with being beaten and thrown in the water, all of this witnessed by neighbors Jean Cote, Noel Langlois and Martin Grouvel (husbands of filles a marier Anne Martin, Francoise Grenieer and Marie Crevet and Marguerite Aubert). The next day Drouin's servant and two men came to their house with pistols with the apparent intention of killing Jamin and Claire, though one of the men, named Jolicoeur, prevented them from doing so. The reason for these incidents has been lost, as well as their outcome."

bullet  Research Notes:

According to Father Arthur Cote's notes Jean Cote' married Anne Martin in 1645 in Quebec. *note I have since found marriage was actually Nov. 17, 1634 in Quebec.

Jean arrived in Canada from France in 1634.

Marriage licence #66322 shows Jean's last name spelt Cotte.

May have died in Nortre Dame, Quebec or be buried there.

According to research done by Paul Cote - Jean came to Quebec on July 20, 1635 (note this date may be out by a year), in company of a group of colonists from Perche, recruited by Robert Giffard, seigneur of Beauport. After several years in the service of the seigneur, he was able to establish his own farm in Feb. 1645. His place of birth is now in Orne.

He had 8 children with Anne Martin and their marriage was the 6th earliest at Quebec, but no parents are shown.

Feb. 3/06 according to PRDH there is no mention of his father or mother being Abraham Cote and Francoise Genevieve Loisel. The PRDH records start with Jean Cote as a immigrant. Listed only as Immigrant - France.

Feb. 14/07 - excerpt from King's Daughters The Filles a Marier, 1634 - 1662 by Peter J. Gagne - page #218 & 219: "Like Anne, Jean's origins in France and his parents' names are unknown, though he is possibly from Mortagne, Perche. According to the Jesuit Relations, Jean arrived in Quebec on July 20, 1635, either on the Saint Jacques or one of the other ships in the same flotilla."

July 27/08 - according to the book Companions of Champlain, page 85 - "Jean Cote, possibly of the province of Perche, France, married 17 Nov. 1635 Quebec, Anne Martin, whose parentage and place of birth is unknown. Jean arrived in Quebec 20, July 1635."
